I have, without exaggeration, the fastest growing mutant alien "grass" in the known world. One year, I let a patch grow - it got over 6 feet. In the right conditions (which apparently I have) you can just about watch it grow and when I say its mutant grass, that's exactly what I mean - broad leafed, thick-stalked and packed tight - I've had this stuff choke and stall my riding mower. Not to be out done of course, hiding within are tall thistles as big around as a broom handle, nettles, sticky weeds and my arch nemesis.....the sticker bush. My yard is VERY lumpy, made all the worse by a mole-hill city and numerous rocks and stone debris hiding under the brush. To say mowing it is a nightmare, is an understatement in the extreme. Over the years I've tried everything from riding mowers to hand scythes and the standard weed-whacker proved to be the best, though far from ideal, solution.....until now. I pulled the "Yard Annihilator 4000" out of its box and was generally impressed with the build quality. The rear wheels looked a little "plasticy" - mostly because they are, but other than aesthetics, I found nothing to gripe about. I added the oil (provided) gas and prepared myself for the inevitable shoulder-destroying start-up sequence. I pumped the primer 5 times, set the control to "fast", pulled back the throttle bar and took hold of the started handle. I braced myself, apologized to my shoulder in advance and pulled the cord......and the Yard Annihilator started up and purred like an angry kitten. First time pull, I was seriously impressed. Then I realized I needed to throw the box on the deck before I went "testing" so I figured I'd need to restart it - but no....let go of the throttle bar and sure enough the Yard Annihilator stops spinning its brush-destroying line, but the motor keeps idling!!...awesome for those times when you need to stop and move something out of your way. Already I knew this machine was worth it - I have to restart my standard trimmer 64-billion times - every time I need to move something, answer the phone, go the little boy's room....etc.. and after a while puling that starter cord gets old..But the Yard Annihilator doesn't have that problem. I started to move out and the grass quaked in its little grassy boots - and with good reason. The Yard Annihilator 4000 ripped through the mutant flora as though it was enjoying a relaxing day at the beach.....I almost felt sorry for the weeds.....almost. Maneuvering the machine is perhaps a little more difficult than a lawn mower, but significantly less taxing than a standard weed-whacker - no aching back, no half-numb hand, etc. Its also a lot faster than a standard line-trimmer. First off - I'd usually have to stop several times to unwind blades of grass from the trimmer head, and then more times to fix a jammed line feed, then some more times to replace the line spool. The Yard Annihilator had none of these issues. The Yard Annihilator doesn't give you a smooth manicured cut - but then that's not its job. This machine isn't a scalpel, it's a broad-sword and it means business. It also doesn't get around all the detail work like a standard line trimmer can, - but the yard Annihilator doesn't care about details, it cares about utterly devastating unwanted brush. It does seem to go through gas quicker than expected, but hey, hard work deserves a drink. The line is also very robust - I hit concrete piers, rocks, wooden posts (you know, all the things you're supposed to avoid) and while the line ends looked a little frayed, they lost virtually none of their length. The Yard Annihilator is also indiscriminant - it demolished some small fir tress I'd forgot I planted and were hidden by grass and it gave my fence post a good thrashing - so be careful where you point it - this machine is hungry and will eat anything. Also, as with all yard work, wear eye protection - The Yard Annihilator did a better job keeping flying debris to a minimum than my weed-whacker, but you're still in the fray with chopped up vegetable matter - it also pretty well covers itself in pulverized grass and weeds, so you'll need to take a little time brushing it off and cleaning out the cutting area when you're done. I can't speak to long-term reliability because obviously I've just got it, but I found nothing to worry me and the engine kept pace without bogging down or stalling even when I was a little more aggressive with my cutting sweeps. If there are any Cons, it really comes down to the wheels - which like I said, are a bit plasticy and would be much better if they were either rubber or inflatable. The tread seems somewhat "rubbery" but there's no give. The speed control also seems a little "vulnerable" to breakage only because it's also plastic and doesn't feel all that solid, but again it worked fine and all it has to do is move back and forth. The finished cut is rough, as expected, but should be easy for a push mower to even out. *****UPDATE**** 4/15/12 So, Its about a year since I wrote the initial review and I thought I'd do a quick update. I pulled the "Yard Annihilator 4000" out of the shed for the first time this season. I rolled it out, pumped the primer 5 times and pulled the cord.....TADA! Instant 1-pull start - again, purred like an angry kitten. It sat untouched since I put in in the shed at the end of last summer - You're probably wondering what my "winterizing" technique is....well, I'll tell you...I brushed the grass off it and put it in the shed - that's it. It performed flawlessly and I can tell you that after a few uses, you start to get a better technique - I've been using this as my "lawn-mower" for the back yard exclusively. No its still not as nice as a properly mowed lawn, but then I don't have proper grass that deserves it. I've only had to replace 1 line (comes with 4) and I've had no issues of any sort whatsoever. If this machine has a downside, its that after using it, no other "Weed Whacker" will ever be enough. There are jobs that still require my typical string trimmer and while I USED to think it was pretty good, I now see it as a weakling dog....the Poulan Pro will elevate your expectations such that no other "hack and slash" garden tool will ever come close.
